Sharing photos of spinsters based in a ward in Maiduguri, Borno state capital, Facebook user Alhaji Bukar claimed the ladies reportedly made an appeal to Borno State Governor, Kashim Shettima begging him to come to their aid because their singleness is taking a toll on them.
According to the Spinsters, they want to be helped like their counterparts in Kano state who are being sponsored by the state government for their weddings.
The mass wedding programme was first introduced in the state by the Rabi’u Musa Kwankwaso administration when the incumbent governor, Abdullahi Umar Ganduje was the deputy. Through the programme, thousands of couples have been wedded by the Kano State government.
Chelsea manager Antonio Conte may feel he’s been proven right so far this season.
All summer long the Italian complained about a lack of action by the Blues in the transfer market, and by mid-October his side are already nine points off the pace in the title race.
Chelsea only lost five matches last season but have already been beaten three times this term, with Conte struggling to put together a side that could beat Crystal Palace this weekend due to so many injuries.
Alvaro Morata and N’Golo Kante were among the biggest names missing, with Chelsea also now having to cope with extra midweek fixtures due to their return to the Champions League.
‘We play seven games in a month, and I need to rotate players. If someone is thinking that I can use only 11 players or 13 players, it’s impossible,’ Conte was quoted by the Metro in August. ‘We are trying to strengthen our squad and, if we are in the transfer market, that means we need to improve the squad.’
In the end, Chelsea brought in Morata, Tiemoue Bakayoko, Antonio Rudiger, Willy Caballero, Davide Zappacosta and Danny Drinkwater.
However, many of their rumoured targets were missed out on, so could Chelsea revisit their interest in any of these five players in January?
Virgil van Dijk
One of the top defenders in the Premier League last season, the Telegraph reported that Chelsea were considering a bid for Southampton’s Virgil van Dijk this summer.
Liverpool were also linked with the Dutchman at the time, and the Daily Mirrorreported recently that Barcelona were ready to join the running for his signature.
It remains to be seen if Chelsea still view Van Dijk as a priority target, but it certainly seems their defence could do with one more major addition after the loss of the hugely influential John Terry in the summer, while Nathan Ake was also sold and Kurt Zouma left on loan.
Alex Sandro
The Daily Mail claim Chelsea will come back in with a £60million bid for Juventus left-back Alex Sandro when the transfer window re-opens.
Conte is said to remain a big fan of the Brazil international, and it’s clear he could do with more depth in that left wing-back spot due to an over-reliance on Marcos Alonso on that side.
Having landed Zappacosta as cover for Victor Moses, Conte will surely feel much happier if he can also have Sandro and Alonso to rotate between from January onwards.
Riyad Mahrez
A player seemingly always linked with a bigger club after shining at Leicester City, could Riyad Mahrez be a surprise solution to Chelsea’s woes this season?
Eden Hazard had a quiet game against Palace and can’t be relied on to do things all on his own all the time, with Willian and Pedro, excellent as they are, not quite in the same calibre of game-changing players.
Mahrez, meanwhile, is a huge talent with flair and inventiveness to alter the course of a game when he hits top form. The Sunclaimed Chelsea wanted him towards the end of this summer, and while the deal never materialised, the Mirror claimed last week that Leicester may since have softened their stance on selling him.
Ross Barkley
A transfer saga riddled with confusion, the Telegraph claimed Everton midfielder Ross Barkley turned down a move to Chelsea on deadline day.
Still, the England international could be worth a gamble again for the Blues this winter, with Kante’s injury and Drinkwater’s struggles to get fit leaving Chelsea thin of options in central midfield.
While Barkley would likely only be cover, he seems worth trying again for if Chelsea want to avoid relying on inexperienced youngsters such as Ethan Ampadu in that role.
Edinson Cavani
Linked with an exit from Paris Saint-Germain after his infamous on-pitch bust-up with Neymar, the Daily Mail list Chelsea as a potential suitor for Edinson Cavani this winter.
With Diego Costa leaving for Atletico Madrid and Michy Batshuayi struggling to impress, Cavani could be an ideal upgrade in that centre-forward position to ease the burden on summer signing Morata.
The Independent reported that Chelsea were keen on Fernando Llorente as another option up front this season, clearly demonstrating that another striker is in Conte’s mind as he weighs up replacing the unconvincing Batshuayi.
Economic Community of West African States, ECOWAS, Court sitting in Abuja, on Thursday, ordered the FG to pay N18million to Nollywood actress, Dorothy Njamenze and two other ladies whose rights it held were grossly violated by security operatives in 2011.
According to a report by Vanguardngr, the other ladies the regional court ordered FG to compensate are Justina Etim and Amarachi Jessyford. It ordered FG to pay the trio N6m each for their unlawful arrest and detention after they were declared as prostitutes in Abuja.
Justice Friday Chijoke Nwoke who delivered the lead judgment, said the ECOWAS court was satisfied that the plaintiffs were humiliated and dehumanised after they were arrested in an operation that was carried out by a joint task force that comprised of military men, police and officials of the Abuja Environmental Protection Board who claimed to have acted on FG’s directive.
The court declared their arrest as arbitrary and unconstitutional, noting that the security operatives failed to prove that the plaintiffs were commercial s*x workers.
More so, the court held that FG’s action by declaring the three ladies as prostitutes, amounted to gross violation of their rights to dignity since they were only arrested for being outside in the late hours.
The ECOWAS Court agreed with counsel to the plaintiffs, Mr. Bolaji Gabari that there was no law in the Nigerian statute book prohibiting women from being outside in the late hours.
Meanwhile, reacting to the judgment, the actress, Njamenze, who wept uncontrollably at the end of the proceeding, expressed her appreciation to the court for giving her justice.
She expressed optimism that with the judgment, the government would reconsider some laws and policies that are discriminatory to women.
Last week, we were hit with photos of a lady who reportedly left her wedding reception, to rush down to school to write her exam in her wedding gown.
The 300 level Economics student of Benue State University, Makurdi, identified as Dooshima Aondaver Moses in an interview with the Punch correspondent, why she took that decision.
Here are excerpts from her interview;
When did you start planning for your wedding?
The whole thing started in 2016. That was when both of us, my husband and I decided to settle down as husband and wife. As a graduate of the same department, my husband understands everything very well, so we were working with the academic calendar. The wedding was supposed to come up in the first two weeks of the second semester of 300 level when there would not be much academic activities.
Unfortunately, the university had an internal crisis which led to the closing down of the university for three months and when we resumed, we thought that the wedding would still hold after the examination but shortly after the local strike was called off then came the national ASUU strike. We still thought that the strike would drag until after our wedding but lo and behold, the strike was suspended, all these changed the academic calendar.
But why didn’t you shift the wedding date?
There was no way we could have called off the wedding because all arrangement had gone far and families and friends from far and near had been informed. So it became extremely difficult to cancel it as many people from Lagos, Abuja and other places had been informed of the October 7 date. So calling off the wedding would have disrupted other programmes. At the time the national strike was called off, the time table for the exam was released.
At the time the time table for your exams was released, what efforts did you make to convince your department to give concession to you?
The time table was released immediately the national strike was called off. Although I informed the department but they told me there was nothing they could do. They said since the time table was already out, there was no time for me to lodge any official complaint. They said if that had happened before it came out, the department might have considered that. Again, the problem is that I was so busy making arrangement for my wedding. It was the same week that we did the traditional wedding, court marriage and church wedding. I decided to go ahead with the marriage and at the same time prepare for my examination.
What was the course you did that day with your wedding gown on?
International Economics and I did it well to the best of my knowledge.
How did you cope preparing for your wedding and your examination at the same time?
Actually, it was not easy for me. I tried to strike a balance by running around and at the same time reading for the examination, it was not easy at all but one thing that kept me going was the fact that I had made up my mind not to carry over any course because of my marriage. So, that decision was my soothing balm.
At what point did you leave the wedding venue for the examination hall?
We had concluded the church ceremony because the marriage was held at Good News Chapel, Benue State University. We were at the reception and shortly after we entered the venue, I had to excuse myself and the train and quietly sneak out, pretending to go to ease myself. Although a few of the bridal train are my course mates, so as I sneaked out, so also my course mates who were in the bridal train. We all rushed down to take the exam.
What vehicle brought you to the exam hall?
It was the same vehicle that I used for the wedding that brought me. The point is that my husband, close family and friends were aware of the plan; so right from the church service, we had to rush the programme, the pastor that officiated our marriage, Pastor Jude, was also aware of the arrangement, he tried to minimise the service until we got to the reception. A few of the officials at the reception were aware of the arrangement.
For instance, the chairman of the reception while addressing the crowd, noted that everything had to be done moderately because the couple needed to meet up with other pressing matters. He did not mention it particularly.
As the reception was in progress, my husband and I were watching ourselves and checking time intermittently so as not to be late to the exam hall because Economics department is very strict with examination guidelines. So knowing this, I was very conscious of time.
You know that many of my course mates were also at the reception, so all of us were cautious of time; in fact, many left the reception before me.
But it is assumed that weddings should be savoured to the fullest without any distraction; didn’t you see it that way?
Well, I see marriage as a lifelong enjoyment, so I did not want to use one to jeopardise the other. It is true it was the day of celebration and many people were at the reception to celebrate me, but I had another important thing which was my examination.
Your paper was fixed for what time?
It was scheduled for 3pm to 6pm that Saturday, it was a three-unit course.
At the time you left the reception, what was the reaction of people and did your husband also follow you?
Well, few of my relations as I earlier said were aware of it, but I learnt there was tension when other guests did not see the bride again, according to what they told me. But gradually, the crowd thinned out; so there was no problem at all but my husband remained behind at the time I left together with a few of the bridal train who are my course mates.
Was there distraction at the time you entered the examination hall?
Since all of them were aware and most of them attended the wedding, there was no distraction at the time I entered the examination hall.
You were not afraid that anything could have happened as you left your husband at the reception?
Nothing could have happened because it was our plan not to rob Paul to pay Peter. A pastor named Isaac was the one who drove the car that day; four of my train were in the same car that brought me, so all of us walked into the examination hall including the pastor.
Was there no time for you to change your wedding gown to normal dress at the time you came to the campus?
Actually, when I came in, I tried to manage the time. Ordinarily, the department has a dress code while coming to class but having eaten into the time, there was no time for me to go and change my dress, after all they were all aware of the wedding ceremony. I am sure that was the privilege they gave me to take the exam.
Since you said that you were in the examination hall throughout the duration, it means you could not go back to the reception?
My plan initially was that I would do the paper and rush back to the reception. Unfortunately, by the time I finished, the whole thing had ended. When I called my husband, he said he was already in the hotel sleeping.
Now that the day had come and gone with the drama created by your action, how will you describe the day?
October 7, 2017 will remain evergreen in my life, a blessed day because it is every woman’s dream to get married. I can not forget the day because the wedding coincided with my examination which I was able to take.
Your examination is still on. As a new couple, you ought to be in honeymoon now.
(Cuts in) To me, I see every day in marriage to be honeymoon, not just to set a few days off for honeymoon. I think what honeymoon means is for your spouse to pet you, kiss you, hug you, take you out and all that but to me, life is in stages. So whatever you have to do, it is better for one to do it well. So for me, honeymoon is a lifetime experience.
Do you have advice for those planning similar thing in future?
My advice to young ladies is to be determined because the way to success is not easy. One needs determination, discipline and focus, because for me, forgoing reception for examination is discipline. I was determined not to fail as any other person could have said there is no big deal, I can carry over the course, but for me, I didn’t want to carry over the course because I have no reason to. Despite the fact that it was a celebration day, I needed to do what was the most priority on my list which was my examination. We should not take things for granted, when it is time to do something, it is better to do it.
A woman, Adenike Adediran has brought a divorce suit against her husband, Lukman Adediran, at Oja Oba/Mapo Court C Customary Court, Mapo, Ibadan, Oyo State on the accounts of neglect and abandonment.
She thus pleaded with the court to separate them and give her custody of their children.
“I have been the one shouldering the responsibility of our home since I got married to my husband 12 years ago.
“I feed him and our children, clothe them and send our children to school.
“He doesn’t know how much the children are paying in school, neither does he know what our house rent is.
“He neglects me and our children and sometimes abandon the home for months.
“He has no shame and goes around boasting I carry out all his responsibilities because I’m head over heels in love with him.
“My lord, he believes I can’t do without him, but I want him to know that I regard him as
Need to know whether you are just a tag along?
As much as we label men dogs, we are sometimes to blame. We tend to hang on to meaningless relationships as women and it comes to bite us in you-know-where, down the road. There are good men out there though it is time to know whether you have a future with your man.
Here are 9 good signs:
1. Talks of “We” not “I”.
If your man speaks of “we” in your conversations most of the time, then he’s a keeper.
2. He values your opinion.
If he asks you what you think about many things, then he values your opinion. Never take this for granted because he trusts you to be real with him.
3. He takes you to family gatherings.
If your man tags you along for family gatherings, it is a sign he thinks highly of you. He has let you in in his private space.
4. He talks about having kids with you.
Does your man talk about who the kids will look like between you and him? If so, you are winning!
RAY
5. He has introduced you to all his friends.
Do you know all your man’s friends? And did he introduce you or is it just a coincidence? If you know all your man’s friends and their girlfriends, then you are probably not wasting your time.
6. He fully trusts you.
If your man can trust you with his heart, his finances, his car, his house, basically the important things, then you are good to go. If he does this, don’t ever give him a reason to doubt you. Don’t take his trust for granted; just like you wouldn’t want him to take you for granted.
7. He has a good relationship with your family members.
Does he have a good relationship with your siblings? Is he even trying? If he values you, he will want to have a good relationship with your family members.
8. He cares if you are happy.
If your man always wants to see you happy and wishes the best for you, then he’s a keeper. Cheaters and liars would care less if you feel bad about something they do. Does your man try to be affectionate any chance he gets? It also means he isn’t playing around with your heart.
9. He has put a ring on it.
This is one of those major signs that he wants to make it official. Just don’t stay in the fiancé level for 5 years, you might as well quit it.
Chelsea are assessing David Luiz and Tiémoué Bakayoko after both players picked up injuries against Roma.
Luiz sustained a calf injury during the first half of the Champions League clash at Stamford Bridge, where the Blues drew 3-3to maintain their place at the top of Group C.
Bakayoko completed the 90 minutes but was struggling with a groin problem.
Luiz, who scored a brilliant opening goal, appeared to be angry about boss Antonio Conte’s decision to take him off in the second half.
But Conte later explained: “It was good to protect him. After the first half the doctor said David had a pain in his calf and the same for Bakayoko with his groin.”
It adds to Chelsea’s injury worries ahead of Saturday’s Premier League game at home to Watford.
Conte’s options have already been limited by injuries to Victor Moses, Danny Drinkwater and key midfielder N’Golo Kante.
The Commissioner of Police in Kwara State, Lawan Ado, yesterday said the command had redeployed policemen at the Adewole Police Division in Ilorin, over an allegation against them.
Ado explained that some residents had alleged that some of the policemen in the division had been selling suspects detained at the station to ritual killers for N 80, 000 per person.
The CP said this during a visit of the District Governor, Rotary International, District 9125, Mr. Mbanefo Nnoka, and his team to the command headquarters.
He disclosed that, although the allegation was false, unfounded and untrue, the command redeployed the policemen to avoid needless rift. He added that no one had come forward with information and evidence to indict any police officer in the state for selling suspects to ritual killers.
According to him, “But we have been redeploying the policemen there. More than half of them have now been transferred and soon, the other half will be redeployed so that even if there is anybody who is involved – which no information has established – we will at least remove him from the area.”
Nnoka who oversees Rotary Clubs in 23 states and the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, said Rotary had spent about $ 7.3 billion globally and N 300 m in Nigeria to fight polio.
He urged parents to continue to immunising their children against polio, saying it was sad that there were still some resistance against polio immunisation in Nigeria.
He urged Nigerians to cooperate with the police to fight crime, adding that policemen were friends of Nigerians
A Nigerian student has narrated on social media how he escaped death by the whiskers after he was attacked by suspected ritualists.
A student of the University of Lagos, Jimmy Fatunbi has narrated how he escaped death after two suspected ritualists attacked him inside UNILAG campus. He said the two kidnappers nearly blinded him after claiming that they were lecturers.

I just escaped being blinded by two assailants, perhaps ritualists, who claimed to be lecturers(one is Dr. Taiwo in Art and Social science department. The other's identity is yet to be ascertained) in the faculty of education right in my school.
However, I sustained serious injury aside my valuables that were taken: I am currently receiving treatment at the University of Lagos medical center. The matter has been reported and the security unit has swung into action. I believe that culprits, despite their 'connection' as they claimed, will be brought to book. . Constituted authorities- The Acting VC, DVCs, DSA, Dean of School of Postgraduate school, Dean of Arts, Dean of Education.
Henry Hall Master, DDSAs and the general students- should please investigate this to prevent gross indiscipline and man inhumanity to man on our campus. Long Live Unilag!
Great leaders aren’t born on trees. It takes time to become a great leader, as well as the ability to adapt and be flexible, and to learn from one’s mistakes. Many of the world’s greatest leaders, in both business and in life, share many common traits that have helped shape their success. At the same time, there are several traits that the best leaders avoid like a plague. Everyone has come across a bad “leader” at some point, or at the very least heard others talking about a bad leader in the break room, or at an off-site get-together. The fact is no one wants to be around a bad leader, let alone work for one. So what kinds of traits should you avoid if you don’t want to become a bad leader?
The U.S. military said on Friday (October 6) that a fourth soldier was killed during an attack on Wednesday (October 4) in Niger, raising the death toll from an incident that has thrown a spotlight on the U.S. counterterrorism mission in the West African nation.
The U.S. military on Friday published the names of the three Army Special Forces soldiers from 3rd Special Forces Group (Airborne) who were killed when their reconnaissance patrol with Nigerien forces came under fire.
They were Staff Sergeant Bryan Black, 35, of Puyallup, Washington, Staff Sergeant Jeremiah Johnson, 39, of Springboro, Ohio and Staff Sergeant Dustin Wright, 29, of Lyons, Georgia.
The United States had previously announced that three U.S. Army Special Forces soldiers had been killed and another two wounded when a joint U.S.-Nigerien patrol came under attack near the village of Tongo Tongo.
It did not disclose until Friday that a fourth soldier had been missing. Officials said his body was found by Nigerien forces on Friday morning near the site of the ambush, ending an extensive rescue and recovery mission.
No group has taken responsibility for the killings, although officials, speaking on condition of anonymity, say the United States suspects a local branch of Islamic State was responsible.
The U.S. military’s Africa Command declined to publicly name any group but said the American military would hunt down the insurgents.
CAN calls on the Federal Government to ensure peace and put an end to the attacks.
Members of the Northern Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) are tired of the violence in Plateau state.
World Watch Monitor reports that they have called on the Federal Government to ensure peace and put an end to the attacks.
In a statement, the Chairman, Rev. Yakubu Pam, said, “The present administration of Governor Simon Lalong had worked round the clock since it came on board to bring lasting peace to parts of troubled communities on the Plateau in the last two years and must be supported by all concerned to bring about peaceful co-existence among all ethnic groups.
“Plateau is home to millions of Nigerians from all walks of life and I call on all warring groups to lay down their arms, embrace dialogue and the mechanisms put in place by the state government towards a peaceful resolution of all issues of conflict in the troubled parts of the state.”
Rev. Pam was supported by the CAN chairman in Plateau, Rev. Soja Bewarang.
The cleric said: “The Miango killings in Bassa Local Government is becoming a very serious matter of concern that if nothing is done urgently, it may reverse the history of peace that is currently enjoyed in Plateau. I call upon the security to increase their networking until the perpetrators of the wicked and inhuman acts are caught and brought to book.”
Rev. Bewarang also prayed for the affected families and advised the government to look into the violent areas.
